How to Get a Cape in Minecraft

Capes are one of the rarest cosmetics in Minecraft. Here is every way to get one, and what to expect from each.

1. Minecon cape accounts

Official Minecon capes (2011 through 2016) were only given to people who attended or registered for the Minecon events. They can no longer be earned, so the only way to wear one today is to purchase an account that already owns it. Full-access accounts let you change the email to your own, giving you permanent ownership, and you can rename the account before playing.

2. Redeemable cape codes

Some capes exist as redeemable codes on minecraft.net/en-us/redeem. You enter the code on your profile, equip the cape in Bedrock Edition, wait about ten minutes, then log out and back in to equip it on Java.

View our cape codes in the shop, with instant email delivery and a 72-hour money back guarantee.

3. Event and promotional capes

Mojang occasionally hands out capes for events, charity drives (like the Migrator and Cherry Blossom campaigns) or account migrations. These windows are limited, so the only way to get one is to watch official Minecraft announcements and act quickly.

4. Bedrock character creator capes

On Bedrock Edition, capes can be bought or unlocked through the Character Creator with Minecoins. These are Bedrock-only items — they do not carry over to Java Edition.

5. Optifine and mod capes

OptiFine hands out its own cape as a thank-you for donations, and mods can add custom capes. Note that other players only see these if they use the same mod, and they never show on vanilla servers.

Which way is best?

For event capes like Minecon, an account that already owns the cape is the only practical option. For modern promotional capes, a code is the fastest route — delivery is instant by email and you can equip it the same day. Browse the shop to see what is currently in stock.
